Fabia I: An automotive surprise with pros and cons
Wow, looking back, what a car this was! On one hand, for its time, it had a modern body line, was spacious (a B-segment wagon - they don't exist anymore!), and often had interesting features, as even manual air conditioning in 2001 was a rarity. On the other hand - a terrible three-cylinder engine, problems with the LPG system, cooling system, gearbox, and a ridiculously hot interior (no heat-resistant glass!!!). It was like a Kinder Surprise – you never knew what you were going to get.
Pros:
Modern exterior design for its era, Spacious B-segment wagon (rare today), Notable optional equipment for the time (e.g., manual AC)
Cons:
Underpowered and problematic three-cylinder engine, Issues with LPG system, cooling, and gearbox, Interior overheats easily due to lack of special glass

Skoda Fabia Review
I used the car for 2 years and would have kept it longer, but I'm looking for something newer, hence the decision to sell. Over two years, I spent 4,000 on repairs, and with this car, you should always budget a few thousand annually for maintenance. Skoda is usually a safe choice, and I can't complain about the costs or the driving experience. When everything is in order on the car, it handles well in corners and, for a standard car, it drives pretty decently. This car isn't built for long trips.
Pros:
Generally safe choice, Decent handling for a standard car, Manageable running costs overall
Cons:
Requires annual maintenance budget of several thousand, Not ideal for long journeys, Significant repair costs over two years

A/C Problem
Good mechanics, decent comfort though noisy. Fuel consumption much higher than manufacturer's claim. Front electric windows stuck closed. Irreparable due to lack of parts at Skoda La Roche-sur-Yon. They offered a new car trade-in. No A/C. Skoda cited irrepairable issue, lack of parts, and offered a 'good' trade-in for a new car. Ridiculous!
Pros:
Good mechanics, Decent comfort (though noisy)
Cons:
Fuel consumption exceeds manufacturer's claims, Front electric windows stuck closed, irreparable due to lack of parts, No air conditioning, Dealer suggests buying a new car due to irreparable part shortage

Problem: Tire Wear
Agile (3 cylinders), economical, and very robust. However, the front axle is a bit loose, the trunk is small, and the fuel tank is small. No major issues; front brake pads replaced at 130,000 km, front axle bushings at 196,000 km, and four sets of tires including winter tires.
Pros:
Spirited (3 cylinders), Economical and very robust
Cons:
Loose front axle, Small trunk and small fuel tank, No major issues

Problem: EGR Valve
Qualities: comfortable, spacious, responsive | Problems: EGR valve failure at 2 years, turbo sensor failure at 75,000 km, expansion tank water loss at 75,000 km, at 1 year old, CD error code (original or copy, especially in summer!)
Pros:
Comfortable, Spacious, Responsive
Cons:
EGR valve failure at 2 years, Turbo sensor failure at 75,000 km, Expansion tank water loss at 75,000 km, CD error code at 1 year (original or copy, especially in summer!)

Problem: Brake Caliper
Excessive city fuel consumption. Noisy on the highway. Fragile power windows. Many electronic bugs. Seats not comfortable on long journeys. Steering too floaty and imprecise. Fragile front axle. Abnormal wear on shock absorbers. Difficulty maintaining consistent RPMs. Problems finding some parts at Skoda dealerships for models discontinued in 2003. Issues: Electronics. Electrical systems. Tachometer stabilization.

Problem: Battery
Exceptional finish for its era, masterful handling. Small engine doing its job well despite only 54 horsepower. Very pleasant 3-cylinder sound. Low consumption (6 liters on the road, 7 liters in the city). Fuel tank too small (50 liters would have been more comfortable than 45). Suspension sometimes too stiff on speed bumps. Battery at 196,000 km, no issues so far.
Pros:
Exceptional finish for its era, Masterful handling, Small engine performs well (54 hp), Pleasant 3-cylinder sound, Low fuel consumption
Cons:
Fuel tank too small (45L), Suspension too stiff on speed bumps, Battery at 196,000 km, no issues yet
