Passat B8

Owned for almost 3 years, I fell in love with this wagon. Although it's a sport-oriented estate with a very aggressive (even too much so) gearbox, the fuel consumption is very low with this transmission. It drinks the same as my previous Peugeot 307 2.0 HDi 136hp hatchback. I bought it with 66,000 km. I replaced the brake set, oil, and filters regularly. No breakdowns that would prevent further travel. Only since purchase have I been trying to figure out why the fan switches on after short trips up to 5 km.

Pros: Low fuel consumption with aggressive gearbox, Reliable, no major breakdowns
Cons: Aggressive gearbox can be too much, Fan switches on after short trips

Passat B8 Review

Agile car, good to drive (except on windy highway days - I don't know why, but from 140 km/h it sways from left to right). Strong paint. Everything is well thought out in terms of ergonomics. Downsides - a rattling air conditioning system right after pickup (repaired under warranty). After about 40,000 km, a squeak when shifting from 3rd to 4th and 4th to 5th gear. This was also repaired, but they had to remove the gearbox. The engine is not very dynamic, especially on the road, but with this displacement, it's not surprising.

Pros: Agile and good handling, Durable paint finish, Ergonomic design
Cons: Sways at high speeds on windy highways, Rattling A/C upon delivery (repaired), Gear shift squeak at ~40k km (repaired), Unremarkable engine performance on the road

Passat B8 Review

We owned this car for 5 years and 73,000 km, in the top Highline version. It served as a car for a family of 2+1, and for business trips on longer routes. I believe it's a great and complete car that is hard to fault. I'm deducting one star for the 150 HP engine power, which is simply too small for this car, and for the noise insulation at higher speeds (especially in the back). Otherwise, it never failed, it's incredibly spacious inside, with a huge trunk (never the phrase 'it won't fit' came up).

Pros: Spacious interior, Huge trunk, Reliable, Complete package
Cons: 150 HP engine is underpowered, Road noise at high speeds (rear)

Passat B8 Review

2017 model without AdBlue. Switched from a Galaxy, where Ford's suspension did the job. First shock: stiff and straight like a cart. I grew to like the simplicity. At 160 km/h on the highway, it gets 5L/100km. An electric bike fits in the wagon with the seats folded, and rear legroom is S-Class comparable. It doesn't rust, doesn't break down. The refined DPF regenerates even in a parking lot after revving. In manual, it's a rocket, and flexible and economical on the road. Decent soundproofing.

Pros: Excellent fuel economy, Spacious interior, especially rear legroom, Reliable and rust-resistant, Good DPF regeneration system, Sporty manual transmission, Large cargo space, Good highway performance
Cons: Stiff suspension compared to previous car, Ride can feel basic

Passat B8 Review

I'm a young driver who's previously owned several cars on a much smaller budget (Passat B5.5 1.9TDI, Alfa Romeo GT 1.9JTD, E46 330xi, Volvo S80 2.4 D5, and a Mercedes CLK W208 2.0K), and I have to say. This car is great. I was skeptical about the ubiquitous plastic and the notion that cars aren't what they used to be, but that's not true at all, at least for a Passat like this. If you enjoy a slightly quicker drive, not just on the highway, but also when...

Pros: Excellent build quality, Refined driving experience, Spacious interior
Cons: Potentially overwhelming tech for some, Can feel less engaging than sportier cars
