V50: A Timeless & Quick Performer

A pleasant, timeless, fast, and safe ride for a reasonable price. The T5 AWD version is a sleeper that can surprise many on the road. Adding the automatic transmission makes it even comfortable. Of course, the car has its flaws, such as a cramped interior, average soundproofing, and creaking plastics, but it compensates with performance, driving pleasure, and the effective AWD system. If you want an inconspicuous yet reliable machine that gets you there.

Pros: Fast and safe performance, Surprising sleeper potential (T5 AWD), Comfortable with automatic transmission, Effective 4x4 system, Great driving pleasure
Cons: Cramped interior space, Average soundproofing, Creaking interior plastics

V50: A Timeless Classic

Looking back, this is a very good car. Optimal as a wagon for a 4-person family (2 small children). The optional tow hitch is very useful, e.g., for a bike rack. And the fuel economy – I'm truly impressed. I loved driving on the road and adjusted my speed to fuel consumption. Service at a friendly, non-authorized workshop was very positive, with low to medium prices – a definite plus. A very nice, classic look – a mini classic Volvo wagon, an ambitious type. And that color – cherry red!

Pros: Excellent for families with young children, Very useful optional tow hitch, Impressive fuel economy, Affordable non-authorized servicing, Attractive, classic Volvo wagon design
Cons: Adjusting speed to fuel economy might not suit everyone

V50

A fast car with great handling, quite spacious and reliable. The main advantage is the engine, which is bulletproof, runs smoothly, is lively, and relatively economical. The car looks unassuming, so its 6.9s to 100 km/h can surprise many at the lights. It's comfortable to drive, with plenty of storage compartments. The Premium version really delivers. Many parts are from Ford, so they're inexpensive. The T5 is based on the Focus ST and has very similar performance. Volvo's advantage is that it doesn't have to be...

Pros: Bulletproof engine with smooth operation and good performance, Agile and fuel-efficient for its power, Unassuming looks hiding impressive acceleration, Comfortable ride and ample storage, Inexpensive parts due to Ford sourcing, T5 shares performance with Focus ST
Cons: The original text is incomplete, so cons cannot be determined.

V50

The V50 is recommendable due to its durable and economical PSA engine, combined with the Focus mk2 platform. It also offers excellent handling and is inexpensive to maintain. It's suitable as a family touring car or a workhorse (you can even transport long items by folding the passenger seat). The number of storage compartments is small, but it makes up for it with the number of pockets (front and behind the seats, and in the middle of the bench). The door pockets can barely fit a wallet, but instead

Pros: Durable and economical PSA engine, Excellent handling, Inexpensive to maintain, Versatile for families and work, Folding front passenger seat for long items, Numerous seatback and bench pockets
Cons: Limited number of dedicated storage compartments, Very small door pockets

V50 Review

Mega comfortable, handles well - those are the main positives. The downside is fuel consumption, it's hard to get below 8L/100km. Short trips (under 10km) push consumption to 10L. It's not a tragedy, but my old Golf 4 used to get 6-8L max, and there's a noticeable difference. Of course, this car is a higher class and heavier by 140kg. Another minus is oil consumption. Almost any car over 200,000km with no engine work done will start consuming oil. 0.5L per 1500km is a lot, and my engine will need a rebuild. Golf

Pros: Very comfortable, Good handling
Cons: High fuel consumption, especially on short trips, Oil consumption after 200,000km, requires engine rebuild

V50: A Long-Term Companion with Persistent Quirks

Car has been in the family for over 15 years; I'm using it temporarily. As far as I remember, it’s always had issues. It was bought when it was 3-4 years old. Almost everything has been replaced. The electrics are incredibly temperamental. Currently, it sometimes fails to lock doors or turn off the radio; sometimes the radio just freezes. I don't know if it's an issue with my particular car, but in city driving, it consumes ~8.7-9.0 liters/100 km. I drive fairly calmly as there's not much to be excited about. Comparing it to direct competitors...

Pros: Long-term family ownership, Good for calm city driving
Cons: Persistent mechanical and electrical issues, Temperamental electrical system (doors, radio), Radio prone to freezing, Relatively high city fuel consumption for its class

V50: A Solid Choice After 3 Years

After 3 years of use, the V50 can be easily described in two words: a good car. I owned it with mileages from 172,000 to 230,000, so during my 'tenure', there was time for several costly replacements of wear-and-tear parts. Nevertheless, I am very satisfied with this period. It never surprised me with a serious breakdown, nor did it ever annoy me to the point of considering selling it for reasons other than 'time for something newer'. For those looking for a relatively cheap, yet still good-looking and...

Pros: Reliable daily driver, Good value for money, Practical and stylish
Cons: Some expensive wear-and-tear part replacements are expected, Can be basic in lower trims

V50 Review

Terribly sluggish in summer - the engine is very sensitive to thinner (hot) outside air + A/C VERY strains this engine. Drives normally in winter, but in summer it gets terribly slow, and you can't drive it from 1000 to 3000 RPM. Additionally, it burns gas and oil like a dragon - I don't know how you can drive this on gasoline (especially in the city) - 14l of gas in constant traffic jams is not a problem, but on the road at 130-140 km/h it's bearable - 11l max. In my case, the engine has probably been rebuilt.

Pros: Drives normally in winter
Cons: Very sensitive to hot air, A/C significantly strains engine, Very sluggish in summer, High fuel consumption (gas and oil), Poor performance between 1000-3000 RPM

Volvo V50: A Familiar Friend with a Twist

This is my second Volvo V50, the first was from 2004. Without the FAP filter, I used it for almost 4 years without issues and was 100% satisfied. Its positive reputation was due to its low fuel consumption, around 5.5l/100 km in mixed driving, as well as its reliability and enjoyable torque. My current 2007 Volvo certainly uses more fuel, as it's hard to get below 6.5 l/100km. I'm not sure if this is due to the FAP filter or the car's technical condition.

Pros: Reliability (previous model), Low fuel consumption (previous model), Good torque
Cons: Higher fuel consumption (current model), Uncertainty about FAP filter impact

V50 Review

For those considering buying this car in 2024/2025. Of course, the car only makes sense with the 6-speed gearbox, which I couldn't select in the choice window. THEREFORE, this opinion concerns the Start-Stop version with the 114 HP D2 1.6 HDI engine from PSA. The power is entirely sufficient for brisk movement, it accelerates well up to 120 km/h, then it struggles a bit, but this vehicle wasn't built for racing. Overall, the car is very economical. Sample route.

Pros: Very economical, Sufficient power for brisk movement up to 120 km/h
Cons: Acceleration struggles above 120 km/h, Limited gearbox selection
