XC90 i: A Worthy Purchase

A car worth buying. Since the Volvo XC90's inception, no one has died in an accident in this vehicle (there's a YouTube video about it). Fuel consumption is sensational for such a heavy car with AWD (4x4). On the highway (90 km/h), it uses up to 13 l of gas. On an expressway (120 km/h), it uses up to 15 l. On the motorway (140 km/h), up to 17 l. In the city, depending on traffic, it's 17 l-22 l. (Measurements are according to GPS, not the speedometer, so no underestimation).

Pros: Exceptional safety record (no reported fatalities), Remarkable fuel efficiency for its size and AWD
Cons: Higher fuel consumption in city traffic

XC90 i: A Surprising Off-Road Champ

My first Volvo was an 850, which was good. Then came the S80, with a weak transmission. Next, the V70 offered some space, but nothing spectacular. Finally, the 2007 XC90 – I had many doubts and fears. With 220,000 km at purchase, it's big, spacious, and a true SUV, not a sports car. The transmission doesn't like aggressive starts. Driving in snow in Zakopane in 2019 was a shock! This car blew me away. I thought it was clumsy, but you mustn't turn off the traction control systems. It handles 50-70 cm of snow without hesitation, going through it all, even getting stuck in snow...

Pros: Exceptional snow handling ability, Spacious interior, Impressive off-road capabilities
Cons: Transmission dislikes aggressive starts, Not a sports performance vehicle

XC90 i: A Solid Performer

Despite its mass and size, the car handles quite confidently, remaining stable on all curves. As expected from Volvo, the front seat comfort is excellent and the seats are great. The trunk offers sufficient space with five people onboard. With 7 passengers, the trunk space is practically non-existent, and the third row is only suitable for children. Ergonomics are at an appropriate level. The biggest plus for Volvo, of course, is the five-cylinder D5 engine. It's not a powerhouse, but that's not its purpose.

Pros: Confident handling for its size, Stable on curves, Excellent front seat comfort, Adequate trunk space (5 passengers), Appropriate ergonomics, Smooth 5-cylinder D5 engine
Cons: Very limited trunk space with 7 passengers, Third row best for children only

XC90 i: A Refined SUV with a Few Quirks

The car is wonderful but has minor flaws. I'd heard about the 'papery' suspension, and there's something to it. For this class of car, the suspension should be better; you feel every pothole. I replaced the shocks and bushings, and it's slightly better, but still too noticeable. The car itself is very quiet inside. The 3.2 V6 gasoline engine sings beautifully. I love listening to its rumble with the sunroof and windows open. The transmission is a bit too eager to downshift. Even a slight press on the accelerator causes...

Pros: Very quiet interior, Beautiful sounding 3.2 V6 engine
Cons: Suspension feels every bump, even after replacement, Transmission overly eager to downshift

XC90 i: A Comfortable and Safe SUV

A very nice car, lots of space, you feel safe when driving. Throughout 9 years of use, the only breakdown was the fuel pump in the tank. After replacing it, there have been no issues. After 160,000 km, a slight jerking of the gearbox appeared, but after a dynamic oil change, the jerking has been absent for 10,000 kilometers. Regarding the gearbox, it could be a bit faster when starting off; the delay between pressing the accelerator and the car actually moving is quite long. The suspension is very comfortable.

Pros: Ample interior space, Exceptional sense of safety, Comfortable and well-tuned suspension
Cons: Gearbox could be quicker to respond when starting
